How to Prep Your Kids for a Family Photo Session | Maui Family Photo | Maui family photography

You will never regret taking family vacation photos! Whether you’re already booked with me or just researching, aloha! You know how magical this session will be, so the key is to help your kids feel excited about it too. Your kids will feed off of your energy. As a photographer and mom of three, I totally understand what it’s like getting your kids on board with something they aren’t used to (like, I REALLY get it). So, don’t worry, you’re not alone!

First things first, here is my guide on what to wear for your family vacation photos so that you can get everyone’s outfits figured out before the day of the session. Now, moving on to the days leading up to the session.

Here are my five best tips to help you get everyone excited about the session. Let’s get started!

1. TALK IT UP

Tell your kids that it’s going to be SO fun taking pictures with your friend Jess! Let them know that I love kids and can’t wait to meet them and take their pictures. Make it seem like this is the most fun ever!

2. BRIBERY

Hey, I’m allll about bribery when it’s necessary! You could promise your kids a yummy treat after the session. I highly recommend shaved ice from Ululanis or Manuela from Manuela Malasada (plus these eight other fun ideas!). Let me in on what the treat is so I can hype it up too!

3. EASY, COMFY OUTFITS

When choosing your outfits for the session, always choose comfort over aesthetics. The comfier everyone is, the happier they’ll be! Happy family = happy photos! When in doubt, lean towards neutrals. Read my full what to wear guide here.

4. STAY CALM

I’m being serious. The more calm and relaxed you are, the more your kids will be too. Try to remember that this is about having fun in a beautiful place with your amazing family; I’m just there with my camera. There are no stuffy poses or long sessions. We move quickly and have a blast doing it! You’ll be pleasantly surprised with how many photos I can take in as little as 15 minutes.

5. TRUST ME

This one is actually for mom. If you’re reading this and worried about how your kids will do for a session, I’m here to ask you to please not worry! I’ve got this. We’re just going to have some fun with your fam, okay? At times the session may feel like chaos, but I’m there snapping away and getting the perfect shots that you’re going to LOVE. So, don’t worry!
