5 Tips to Have a Great Multi-Family Photography Session
1. Sunrise Session
Does it sound insane to wake up your entire family before the sunrise?! I promise you it’s really not I highly recommend a sunrise session for a big group. A have a few reasons, and you can read my entire post right here. I’ll share some of my reasons right here for you too. 1) Because of the time change, everyone will be up anyway. 2) You can enjoy the beautiful sunrise colors! 3) NO WIND. Maui beaches get super windy.
2. No-Stress Wardrobe Styling
A word on styling your family, please don’t stress! We want everyone to feel comfortable and happy. However, as you’re planning this momentous session, you might worry about what everyone should wear. As a mom, I KNOW what it’s like to get your family ready for a session. You want everyone to look “perfect” for the photo! The secret is that everyone is already perfect just the way they are. You don’t need to worry. Just communicate anything particular with your family long before the session!
3. Communicate Any Groupings!
Please communicate any special groupings with me so that I can take them for you! Of course, we’ll do the entire family and individual families. However, if you want a photo of just your adult children (I usually try to get that one too, but it’s good to tell me), or you want the girls, grandpa, and his grandkids, etc, etc, please tell me!
4. Prep the Kids
Whether the kiddos are familiar with a photography session or not, it never hurts to prep! Leading up to the session, talk up the experience like it’s the BEST THING EVER. Assure them that this will be so fun and that you can’t wait for the photos. Don’t worry if you have a shy child or a tween who could care less, I can get them smiling :)
5. Prep Dad/Grandpa/Uncle, etc.
Okay, this is a big one. I put dad, grandpa, and uncle because these family members tend to be the most apprehensive about a family photo session. This person could be anyone in your family, really! The truth is that the person who is the most apprehensive tends to enjoy the session the most. Think about it, they get to spend time on the beach with all of their loved ones. They will love it. Prep them by talking up the session and sharing how excited you are about it.
Finally, feel free to bribe any children or adults who need it.
